I learned this lesson firsthand during my time with Tulsa Techstars. My initial product seemed impressive on paper, but it didn't resonate emotionally with users. FreeWriter: The Cool Concept Conundrum
When I arrived at Tulsa Techstars, my startup, FreeWriter, aimed to gamify the writing process using AI to create competitive narratives. I focused on disrupting the publishing, screenplay, and game design industries. I had a chip on my shoulder due to the difficulties I'd faced breaking into these fields—I didn't know where to start, and I saw no one from my community in those roles. It was an exciting concept that leveraged cutting-edge technology and appealed to storytelling enthusiasts. Yet, despite its innovation, FreeWriter lacked an emotional connection with users. It wasn't addressing a problem that people felt deeply about.
Pivoting: The Agile Advantage
One key advantage of being pre-revenue is the ability to pivot quickly. After extensive conversations, I refined our ideal customer profile. People showed particular enthusiasm for my previous work at Code313, where I taught kids storytelling and game level design.
As I dug deeper, I realized our tool was helping people structure their ideas in narratives. Many clients who benefited from our story framework struggled with communicating complex ideas. This observation led me to consider issues related to focus and organization.
Through thorough customer discovery and direct engagement with potential users, I uncovered a significant need: many children with ADHD struggle to organize their thoughts, making traditional learning methods less effective for them. This insight became the cornerstone for our pivot.
Redefining FreeWriter
Armed with this newfound insight, I reoriented FreeWriter towards a specific, impactful goal: helping kids with ADHD untangle their thoughts and structure their ideas into coherent narratives. Using play as a medium, FreeWriter now provides a fun and engaging way for these kids to learn how to write and ideate more efficiently. This pivot not only aligned the product with a real need but also added a meaningful emotional component to our solution.
